H.E. Mr. Nguyen Tam Chien was born in Nghe An Province, central Vietnam, on January 20, 1948.

August 2001: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United States of America.

August 2000: Granted title Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.August 1997: Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, exclusively in charge of economic affairs and multilateral affairs, international and regional organizations such as the United Nations, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

1996 to 1997: Assistant Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1992 to 1996: Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to Japan.

1984 to 1992: Deputy Director General (1988) and Director General (1990) Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1980 to 1982: Desk officer at the Soviet Union Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1975 to 1980: Attache at the Vietnam Embassy in Moscow.

1973 to 1975: Desk officer at the Soviet Union Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1972 to 1973: Vietnamese Embassy in Moscow.

1972: Graduated from the Engineering University in the former Soviet Union as an electrical/mechanical engineer.

1982 to 1984: Attended the Moscow Diplomacy Academy, Master's Degree in International Relations.
