WB grants 520million loans to Vietnam


Ha Noi, July 5 (VNA) -- Poverty Reduction Support Credit, Ho Chi Minh City Environmental Sanitation, Mekong Delta Transport and Flood Protection are Viet Nam's three projects that will receive credits of USD 520 million from the World Bank.

Agreements to the effect were signed in Ha Noi on July 5 by Governor of the State Bank of Viet Nam Le Duc Thuy and visiting WB Vice President Jamil Kassum.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung witnessed the signing ceremony.

Deputy FM visits 5 European countries

Ha Noi, July 5 (VNA) -- Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Van Nganh has paid a working visit to five European countries - the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, and Croatia.

During the visit from June 20 to July 5, Nganh held talks with Secretaries of the five Foreign Ministries and held working sessions with officials of those countries' Ministries of Economics and Trade.

During their talks, the two sides informed each other of their respective countries' situation and exchanged views about international and regional issues of common concern.

Vietnam to attend UN special session on HIV/AIDS



Ha Noi, June 22 (VNA) -- A delegation of Viet Nam, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, on June 22 left the country for a UN special session on HIV/AIDS to be held in New York.

The Vietnamese delegates are from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Education and Training, and the Government Office.

They will join other senior officials, scientists, and representatives of social organisations from 160 countries and territories worldwide to discuss measures to gain control over the disease by 2015.

Positive changes after new policies on taxation


Ha Noi, June 24 (VNA) -- Viet Nam registered a GDP growth rate of 7.3 percent in the first six months of this year, compared with 6.2 percent in the same period last year. High year-on-year increases were seen in the production of crude oil, up by 21.4 percent; cement, 17.9 percent; TV sets, 23.1 percent; and cars, 52.9 percent.

Customs law was passed



Ha Noi, June 23 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's National Assembly, passed the country's first official customs law after two days of intense debate on Saturday, June 23.

The Customs Law is one of the six draft laws that also include the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the Land Law; the Law on Fire Prevention and Fighting; the Law on Cultural Heritage; the Law on Road Traffic; and the Law on Amendments and Supplements to the Criminal Proceedings Code, due to be adopted at this month-long session since May 22.

Medical funds for poor people to be set up



Ha Noi, June 21 (VNA) -- The Health Ministry has initiated the establishment of funds at both central and local levels to cover medical examinations and treatment charges for the poor across the country.

The initiative was brought up for debate at a conference held in Ha Noi on June 20, under the guidance of Health Minister Prof. Do Nguyen Phuong. He worked together with senior officials from the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs; the Ministry of Finance and relevant services of many cities and provinces.

FM Spokeswoman on Vietnam-Vatican ties



Ha Noi, June 21 (VNA) -- Mutual respect and understanding between Viet Nam and the Vatican has gradually deepened, and progress has been recorded in the relationship since the early 1990s, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh said.
