Orientation for Government’s action programme for 2002-2007

Prime Minister Phan Van Khai delivered a speech to the plenary session on August 8 of the current 11th National Assembly on the Orientation for the Action Programme of the government in the 2002-2007 term.

After reviewing the tremendous achievements recorded by Vietnam over the past 15 years of the renovation stage and highlighting advantages and difficulties which the country has been facing, the prime minister pointed to specific tasks for the government in this new term.

Vietnam Speeds up Tariff Reform


HANOI, Aug 9 Asia Pulse - With the 2006 deadline for slashing tariffs under ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) approaching, Vietnam is set to include 760 commodities in the Common Effective Preferential Tariff regime next year.
These items will be transferred from the Temporary Exclusion List to the Inclusion List.

Under a programme to accelerate AFTA accession, the country will include 80 per cent of all goods in the Inclusion List with tariffs of 0-5 per cent by 2003 as against the current target of 65 per cent by 2006.

Vietnam makes active contribution to regional cooperation

FM Nguyen Dy Nien address to the ninethARF

Bandar Seri Begawan, Aug. 1 (VNA) -- Regional peace and security have been threatened by among others terrorism, transnational crimes, and regional conflicts, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has warned the ninth ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF).

Addressing the regional forum in Brunei on Wednesday, July 31, Minister Nien also spoke of environmental deterioration and epidemics, and the particularly negative impacts of the on-going process of globalisation, which has been widening the development gap between nations.

FM Nguyen Dy Nien calls for closer ASEAN+3 cooperation

Bandar Seri Begawan, July 31 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has called on the three ASEAN dialogue partners in Northeast Asia to take an active part in the Development Cooperation Forum on the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) slated for in Jakarta on August 15-16.
"China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) should further help ASEAN countries, especially new members, in developing information technology, human resource and infrastructure facilities in order to facilitate their effective regional integration," FM. Nguyen Dy Nien said.

National Assembly elected committees


Ha Noi, July 31 (VNA)-- The 11th National Assembly today elected heads, deputy-heads and members of its committees as well as the session's secretariat.

Trang A Pao was elected as Chairman of the 39-strong Council of Ethnic Minorities. Six others were elected as Vice Chairpersons.

The 34-member Law Committee saw Vu Duc Khien elected as Chairman and four others as Vice Chairpersons.

The 40-member Economic and Budget Committee saw Nguyen Duc Kien elected as Chairman and four others as Vice Chairpersons.

The fourth Buddhism training course opened in Ha Noi


Ha Noi, July 26 (VNA) -- The fourth Buddhism course was opened by the Viet Nam Buddhism Institute at its headquarters, Quan Su Pagoda, in Ha Noi this morning, July 26.

Prominent among those present at the opening ceremony was Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu, who is Permanent Deputy Chairman of the Executive Council of the Viet Nam Buddhist Sangha and Rector of the Viet Nam Buddhism Institute.
