Vietnam seafood exporters reject American catfish CFA accusation

Ha Noi, June 29 (VNA) -- The Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP) vehemently rejects the American Catfish Farmers Association (CFA)'s accusation that VASEP has dumped catfish in the U.S. market.

Private economic sector makes positive progress

Ha Noi, June 30 (VNA) -- The private economic sector has made positive progress both in quantity and quality alongside other economic sectors during the renovation process.

In the 2000-2001 period, 35,157 enterprises were set up in the whole country, equal to the total number of enterprises registered in the 1991-1999 period. In addition, about 300,000 individual business households registered to do business in this period.

About 4,200 newly-established enterprises registered to do business in the first three months of this year.

US company UT Starcom signs contract with VN Post Telecom Co.

Ha Noi, June 26 (VNA) -- The UTStarcom of the U.S. has signed 19.8-million USD contracts with the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT) to supply mobile phone facilities for inner Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Under the contracts, Ha Noi will receive 60,000 mobile phone lines and Ho Chi Minh City, 90,000 lines.

These are the first contracts between the two corporations.

Ordinance on the Most favored nation in foreign trade

Ha Noi, June 27 (VNA)-- Viet Nam's first ever ordinance on the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) and the National Treatment (NT) in foreign trade will come into force from Sept. 1 this year.

By applying these two basic principles of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in four key areas: commercial goods, commerical services, investment, and intellectual property, Viet Nam has made a significant step in its global integration.

Moody's positive rating outlook to Vietnam

New York, June 19 (VNA) -- The world's leading credit rating agency, Moody's, has changed the outlook from stable to positive for Viet Nam's B1 foreign currency country ceiling for bonds and notes, as well as the B3 foreign currency country ceiling for bank deposits.

The U.S-based agency said the rating change is resulted from an improved external payments position, political and economic stability, and a credible commitment by the Vietnamese government to advance structural reforms beyond a point that was previously considered politically acceptable.

Deputy PM Cam urges U.S to remove barriers to bilateral ties

Washington, June 21 (VNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam has urged the U.S. to remove existing obstacles to further enhance bilateral friendship and equally and mutually beneficial cooperation with Viet Nam.

The U.S. also asked to completely waive the Jackson-Vanik amendment for Viet Nam, not consider the promulgation of the draft Viet Nam Human Right Act, and to provide support for Viet Nam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Fitch gave Vietnam positive ratings

Ha Noi, June 14 (VNA) -- The international rating agency, Fitch Ratings, on Wednesday assigned foreign and local currency long-term debt ratings of "BB-"(BB minus) and "BB", respectively, to Viet Nam. The outlook of these ratings was positive.

The agency also assigned short-term foreign currency rating of "B" to the country, it said in its June 12 statement.

Fitch Ratings is the second international rating agency to assign positive ratings to Viet Nam.

U.S Ambassador praises Vietnam's economic renewal

New York, June 11 (VNA) -- U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam Raymond F. Burghardt, has lauded Viet Nam's economic renewal at a dialogue with U.S. ambassadors to Southeast Asian countries.

At a meeting in New York on June 10, Mr.Burghardt stated that Viet Nam's economy has seen significant changes since the country implemented the national renewal process in 1986.

He elaborated that Viet Nam has become the world's second biggest exporter of rice and coffee, attributing this to effective reforms in the agricultural sector.
