Vietnam growing tourism among world’s fastest

Vietnam earned a spot in the 2005 Top 10 List of Travel and Tourism Economies, with an expected annual growth of 7.7 per cent for the next 10 years, according to a world tourism body.
The assessment on Travel and Tourism Demand in 2006 to 2015 was reported at a summit of the World Travel and Tourism Council in New Delhi, India Saturday.

Vietnam stands in seventh place, following sixth place Sudan which has the same estimated annual growth of 7.7 per cent.

More Vietnamese publishers heed copyrights

More local publishing houses have started partnering up with foreign counterparts to seek permission to reproduce books in compliance with the Berne Convention, said a top official April 11.
Publishing houses are now taking a more active role in seeking out copyrights to publish books in the Vietnamese language than when the Berne Convention was first applied, said Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Do Quy Doan at a publishing industry meeting in Hanoi Monday.

Vietnam became a participating member of the Berne Convention in October 2004.

Domestic business pitch to US market

Ha Noi — Vietnamese enterprises need new trade promotion strategies, such as campaigns to market the country’s image and tourist services, and the establishment of trade centres and wholesale networks, to increase their competitiveness in the US market, reported an official from the Ministry of Trade.

At a seminar held by the ministry’s trade promotion agency (Vietrade) on Wednesday, its deputy head An The Dung said Vietnamese businesses should devise long-term strategic plans, choose quality products, and study data on US market demand before exporting to the US.

Vietnam PM wants higher quality bills for WTO entry

Prime Minister Phan Van Khai recently demanded the process of making bills serving Vietnam's bid to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) be accelerated and of higher quality.

In his instruction, dated April 4, the government leader requested that ministers, leaders of government agencies and directors of the designated bill compilation committees strengthen their human resources and spend more time and money on making bills and ordinances so that they are completed on schedule and better quality.

Vietnam eyes easier import procedures for foreign firms

Vietnam’s trade ministry has urged the government to allow foreign-invested companies to import production materials without having to apply for approval from concerned authorities.
Currently, a foreign enterprise needs permission from either the administration or the trade and tourism department of the industrial zone, or the province where it is located to import equipment and machines to amass company assets and materials for production.

Easy for Vietnamese firms to do business in U.S.; experts

Vietnamese companies will face no hurdles in doing business in the United States if they are well-prepared, American economic lawyers and experts said in a seminar April 6 in Hanoi.
Vietnamese businesses do not have to apply for a license to operate in the U.S., Ross Meador, chairman of U.S. law firm Rogers & Meador LLP, said at the seminar.

The seminar discussed business opportunities in the U.S with about 100 Vietnamese entrepreneurs in attendance.

Economy expands 7.2% despite droughts, avian flu, price hikes

HA NOI — Viet Nam’s economy managed to expand 7.2 per cent in the first quarter of this year despite prolonged droughts in the central and central highlands areas, the avian flu epidemic, and materials’ price hike, the Government said during a two-day meeting which closed yesterday in Ha Noi.

The Government’s figures matched the General Statistics Office’s report which revealed the first quarter’s growth was way lower than the Government’s full-year expectation of 8.5 per cent.

VN upbeat as WTO meeting ends

HA NOI — Positive results were achieved at the recent round of talks between Viet Nam, the US and Canada on the country’s accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO), said the National Committee for International Economic Cooperation.

At the negotiations with the US, which took place in Washington from March 14 to 16, Viet Nam discussed requirements on opening the market to US goods and services that the US proposed in January.

US naval ship makes port call in Vietnam

A US Navy vessel docked at the Saigon port in Ho Chi Minh City at noon Mar. 29 for a five-day visit aimed at boosting bilateral relations between Vietnam and the US.

The USS Gary (FFG 51) marked the third visit by a US military vessel to Vietnam since the end of the Vietnam War, following the USS Vandegrift’s visit to Ho Chi Minh City in November 2003 and the USS Curtis Wilbur’s visit to Da Nang in July 2004.

Foreign sector helps exports top $6.7b

HA NOI — Viet Nam has achieved US$2.5 billion in export turnover during the month of March, reported the General Statistics Office (GSO).

This month’s export turnover has brought the total for the first three months to $6.7 billion or an increase of 16.2 per cent against the same period last year.

According to economists at the GSO and the Ministry of Trade, the high export turnover in March was largely due to increasing prices on the global market.
