Intellectual property rights library opens

HCM City -- An intellectual property rights reference collection opened in HCM City on Monday (January 19).

The General Sciences Library in HCM City and the U.S.-Vietnam Trade Council Education Forum jointly developed the project.

The aim is to promote the development of resources, information and understanding of intellectual property rights in Vietnam.

IBM eyes Viet Nam's small and medium enterprises

HCM City, Jan. 2 (VNA) - IBM Vietnam Co. will focus its business interests on Viet Nam's small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by providing them with cheap software solutions in the years ahead.

"SMEs account for nearly 90 percent of the total number of companies in Viet Nam, therefore targeting these customers will be a new focus for IBM," said Rahman AB Mizan, Country General Director of IBM Vietnam Co.

Foreign investors prick ears to Vietnam bourse

The hive of activity among foreign investors on the HCM City securities trading floor has contributed to the recovery of the VN-Index, confirmed Vu Bang, Deputy Chairman of the State Securities Commission on December 26 in HCM City.

The number of foreign investors opening accounts for stock transaction in 2003 increased 36% compared to 2002, mostly through the Saigon Securities Company (SSI). They also now account for 27% of all trade value on the bourse.

US-Viet Nam trade may hit $6b in 2003



HCM CITY — Bilateral trade between Viet Nam and the US this year is expected to reach up to US$6 billion, including $4.5 billion from Vietnamese exports to the US, a US Customs report stated.

By the end of October, the two countries had recorded $5.1 billion in trade, more than double the value for the same period last year. Of that figure, exports to the US comprised $3.9 billion and imports from the US accounted for $1.2 billion.

US report contains biased judgment on religion in Vietnam



A US State Department report on international religious freedom contains biased judgments on the religious situation in Vietnam, said a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry.

The spokesman, Le Dung, on Friday answered an AFP correspondent's question on Vietnam's re-action to the US Department of State's 2003 report on international religious freedom which includes judgments on Vietnam's religious situation.

Garment exporters should pay more attention to non-quota markets

Ha Noi, Dec. 16 (VNA) - "Garment businesses should not stick to the US market only but many non-quota markets such as Japan, Canada and the Middle East," said Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan.

He was speaking at a conference entitled "Challenges and Solutions to the Garment Sector Beyond 2004" held by the Ministry of Trade (MOT) in Ha Noi on Tuesday.
