Vietnam to promote e-commerce

Commerce One and Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corporation are discussing a business deal to open up Vietnam's e-commerce market, the Commerce One Vietnam sales manager said on April 18 in Hanoi during an introduction of the 'Scalability Roadshow Asia 2001' programme.

The programme is organised by Microsoft, Intel, Unisys and other IT companies.

"The talks have just started, so not much of the contents has been agreed," James Tang, the sales manager, told. "Given the population of over 75 million, Vietnam has great potential for e-commerce."

Intel Southeast Asia executive Dave Perks said Vietnam should accelerate e-commerce or else it would see some adverse impacts on its economy in the next three to five years.

Vietnam must keep pace with IT development and new trade practices, he said. India, as a classic example for Vietnam, initially neglected e-commerce and has been forced to put its exporters online so that their partners could follow up their performance of orders.

Internet-related fees and very low Internet connecting speed are hindering e-commerce in Vietnam, which should urgently put things right," he said. (SGT)
