Vietnam's GDP growth rate of 6.8 percent in 2001


Ha Noi, Dec. 31 (VNA) -- Viet Nam got a gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate of 6.8 percent in 2001, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

This year's GDP growth rate was 0.1 percent higher than that of 2000 and has been a record figure since 1998.

However, the rate was lower than the yearly planned target of 7.5 percent.

The industry and construction sectors contributed a growth rate of 3.7 percent while the service sector, 2.5 percent and the agro-fisheries sector, 0.6 percent.

Agricultural production saw remarkable changes in structures of crops, and animal breeding.

Farmers in many localities have replaced low-output rice cultivation with industrial crops, orchards and aquaculture.

The country's total food output reached more than 34 million tonnes, including 3.55 tonnes of exported rice.'

Earnings from the export of sea food reached USD 1.8 billion.

Industrial production value was VND 228,182 billion (roughly USD 15.21 billion) in 2001, a 14.2 percent year-on-year increase.

This is the 11th year that Viet Nam saw industrial growth rate higher than 10 percent.

Earnings from services in 2001 was VND 238,123 billion (roughly USD 15.87 billion), a 8.5 percent year-on-year increase.--VNA
