Gia Lai meets with relatives of illegal migrants

Gia Lai, Mar. 1 (VNA) -- The Fatherland Front in central highlands Gia Lai province on Friday met with nearly 500 relatives of ethnic people who were deceived by malefactors into illegally crossing the border to Cambodia.

During the meeting, relatives of these illegal migrants were briefed on the major contents of the tripartite agreement signed between Viet Nam, Cambodia and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) dealing with the repatriation of people from the Central Highlands who illegally fled to Cambodia and now are living in the UNHCR's camps in Cambodia. They were also introduced to the Party and State's national great unity policy.

Many of them expressed their joy and confidence in the Party and State's clemency policy towards the returnees.

Messr Sui Mien, Nay To and Kpi Pier of the Central Highlands' Chu Se district, who had visited the illegal migrants in Cambodia on the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, reported to the 500 relatives at the Friday meeting that conditions in the UNHCR camps in Cambodia were difficult. Meanwhile, Evangelisme pasteur Sui Y Kim spoke about the implementation of religious policy to a number of his religious followers.

In particular, A Luk in La Del commune of La Grai district, who escaped from Cambodia back to his homeland, said that he had received neither punishment nor discriminatory treatment since returning home to Viet Nam.

After the meeting, all relatives of the illegal migrants wrote requests to the UNHCR, asking the organisation to strictly implement the tripartite agreement.--VNA
