Vietnam's cooperation with UN agencies helps UN aid operation
Ha Noi, May 2 (VNA)-- Viet Nam's close cooperation with UN agencies, which has proved decisive to every project's success, is an experience for the UN to improve its aid operation in other developing countries, said its senior officials.
President of the UNICEF Executive Board A. Franco, and Permanent Representative President of the UNDP/UNFPA Executive Board D. Van Den Berg shared this view in their interview with the national daily Nhan Dan (People) during their recent joint visit to Viet Nam.
Viet Nam was the only destination in the Asian-Pacific region for the delegation in its world fact-finding tour, and it was the first visit ever made to a developng nation by a joint delegation representing two executive boards of the UN organisations. It was because, the two senior UN officials said, in the UN's view Viet Nam combines all of the factors that have made UN aid projects successful. The central Government's strong commitment, and the close cooperation between the UN aid agencies and relevant Government agencies, local authorities, and local communities, were among those factors, they said.
Back from a fact-finding tour of some provinces, including northern border Quang Ninh province and central Quang Nam province, the two senior UN officials appreciated the Vietnamese Government's strong partnership and capability to fulfil its commitments and targets.
They said they would report all that they saw during the visit to the executive boards of the two organisations to help improve the two agencies, in particular, and the entire UN development system, in general, and improve their aid operations in other developing countries.
As an official in charge of protecting the rights of the child the world over, Franco said he was greatly impressed by Viet Nam's efforts and success in this field. He said the Government's decision to delegate two children to the national mission to an upcoming UN-sponsored World Summit on Children to be held in Paris, France, has proven the Government's commitment to children's development.
UNICEF-Viet Nam is continuing to operate effectively in the country, making considerable progress in meeting the objectives outlined in the national programme of action for children up to 2010, asserted Franco.--VNA
