Textile industry calls for elimination of all quota restrictions
Ha Noi, May 21 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's textile industry has called on the United States and the European Union to eliminate all quantity restrictions imposed on textile imports from Viet Nam, said Le Quoc An, Chairman of the Viet Nam Textile and Garment Association.
Mr. An was speaking at the 35th meeting of the International Textile and Clothing Bureau (ITCB) in Ha Noi on Monday.
He also called on ITCB member countries to support Viet Nam in removing restrictions that the U.S. Government might impose on apparel imports from Viet Nam.
Viet Nam calls for ITCB member countries's support of its proposals for the EU's increase of import quotas for textile and clothing, An said.
For several years, the textile industry has been considered one of major export sectors, making vital contributions to Viet Nam's economy.
The industry earned USD 2 billion from exports last year, accounting for 24 percent of the country's total export turnover, according to Industry Minister Dang Vu Chu.
In the first four months of this year, the industry registered an export value of USD 608 million, a year-on-year increase of 6 percent. Of the total exports to the U.S. reached USD 80 million, five times more than same period last year.
It now has 1,000 affiliate enterprises in all economic sectors, employing nearly 1.5 million workers.
Viet Nam plans to earn USD 2.4 billion from the export of garments and textiles this year.--Enditem
