Vietnam effforts to reduce iodine deficiency in children


Ha Noi, Nov. 2 (VNA) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has commended the Government of Viet Nam on its efforts to protect children from the harmful effects of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD).

Severe iodine deficiency has been eliminated in 49 of Viet Nam's 61 provinces and cities and it is anticipated that in the near future, iodine deficiency can be eliminated throughout the country.

Vietnam and UN draft resolution on the Korean Peninsula



Nov. 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam underlines that the adoption of the draft resolution on "Peace, Security and Reunification on the Korean Peninsula" by the United Nations General Assembly is of special significance for the question of peace and security in North East Asia as well as the world over, said Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Chau, Permanent Representative to the UN.

Speaking at the 55th session, On Agenda Item 183: "Peace, Security and Reunification on the Korean Peninsula" of the UN General Assembly in New York on Oct. 30, 2000, Mr. Chau said:

3,1 million telephone subscribers in Vietnam


Ha Noi, Nov. 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam now has nearly 3.1 million telephone subscribers and 90,000 Internet subscribers, according to the Viet Nam Post and Telecommunications Corporation (VNPT).

As many as 2.4 million are regular telephone subscribers and the remainder use mobile phones.

The VNPT has so far this year installed 637,000 telephones, up 37,000 from the target for 2000. Of these, there were 340,000 pre-paid mobile phones.

Vietnam attends World Trade Union Federation's meeting



Nov. 1(VNA) -- President of the Viet Nam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) Cu Thi Hau attended the 14th session of the Presidential Council of the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU) held in Kuwait between Oct.28 and 30.

The session drew the participation of more than 50 delegates representing trade union organizations in Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and international agencies.

Crack down on drugs conducts nationwide



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- A crack down on drugs will be conducted nationwide from today, Oct. 30, to Jan. 30, 2001 as announced at a conference held recently in Ha Noi by the Ministry of Public Security.

At the conference to review the country's fight against drugs in 2000 it was reported that anti-drug forces have so far this year detected nearly 9,000 drug-related cases involving 16,200 people.

10,000 businesses set up under new Enterprise Law



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- The Water and Development Joint Stock Company in Ho Chi Minh City became the 10,000th business set up under the revised Enterprise Law on Oct. 10.
The company, with a registered capital of VND 15 billion (USD 1.07 million) will be involved in the exploitation, treatment and trade of safe water, civil engineering, water supply and drainage projects, forest and industrial tree planting projects.

Vietnam Airlines opens new route to Laos and Cambodia



Oct. 29 (VNA) -- A ceremony to inaugurate a new air route from Ha Noi via Vientiane and Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City was held at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane city, on Oct. 29 by Vientiane-based branch of the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines.

The first regular flight on the new route Ha Noi (Viet Nam)-Vientiane (Laos)-Phnome Penh (Cambodia)-Ho Chi Minh City (Viet Nam) and vice versa was implemented by Vietnam Airlines under an agreement on air transport cooperation
