Viet Nam's fisheries sector in 10 months of this year
Ha Noi, NOv. 8 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's fisheries sector caught more than 1.73 million tonnes of aquatic products in the past ten months of this year, a 13 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Ministry of Fisheries.
Of the figure, nearly 1.16 million tonnes were sea products, a year-on-year increase of 12 percent, and 570,000 tonnes were cultivated aquatic produce, meeting 80 percent of the yearly plan due to adverse weather conditions in the Mekong delta and central provinces.
Floods ravaging the Mekong Delta from early July killed 429 people and caused material losses estimated at VND 3,793 billion (roughly USD 263.8 million).
In the reviewed period, the sector achieved an export turnover of USD 1.16 billion, outstripping the yearly plan by 3 percent and registering year-on-year increase of nearly 46 percent.
Localities and enterprises attaining the highest export turnover were Ho Chi Minh City, with more than USD 160 million; the southernmost province of Ca Mau, USD 180 million, the southern province of Soc Trang, USD 130 million, and the Can Tho Export Aquatic Products Processing Enterprise, nearly USD 70 million.
Viet Nam has exported aquatic products to more than 60 countries and territories with Japan and the US being the biggest importer. As many as 40 Vietnamese businesses have been listed for aquatic product exports to the EU.
