EU has accepted Vietnamese aquatic products

Ha Noi, March 20 (VNA) -- The European Union has accepted the chemical level in Viet Nam's aquatic products.

It has done so after testing hundreds of fish and shrimp samples delivered by the National Centre for Aquatic Food Quality Management and Hygiene.

Officials at the centre say anti-biotics for fish and shrimp raised by farmers, reproductive stimulants, crop insecticides, low-quality fodder and the concentration of heavy metals from polluted water, especially around inlands and the coast, that might harm aquatic products are tightly controlled.

Viet Nam has more than 3,260 km of coastline and a criss-cross system of lakes and canals, ideal to aquaculture.

Aquatic exports earned USD 1.4 billion last year. The figure is expected to almost double to USD 2.5 billion by 2005 and to reach USD 3 billion by 2010.--VNA
