The Fifth National Party Congress in 3/1982
Ha Noi, April 14 (VNA) -- The fifth National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam affirmed its resolve to continue carrying out the socialist revolution and build a socialist economy set at the fourth Congress.
The fifth Congress was held in Ha Noi from March 27-31, 1982 with the participation of 1,033 delegates representing more than 1.727 million Party members from 35,146 Party committees. Forty-seven international delegations attended the event.
Comrade Le Duan delivered the political report to the Congress, affirming the resolve to continue carrying out the socialist revolution and build a socialist economy set at the fourth Congress.
The fifth Congress adopted the revised Party Statute and elected a Party Central Committee of 116 full and 36 alternate members.
The Party Central Committee elected a 13-full member Political Bureau.
Comrade Le Duan was re-elected General Secretary (he held this position till his decease on July 10, 1986).
The Congress marked a new change in the Party's leadership in the struggle "All for the socialist Fatherland and the happiness of the people".
The Party Central Committee's meetings from the fifth Congress to the sixth Congress were held in March, 1982; July 1982; December 1982; June 1983; December 1983; July 1984; December 1984; June 1985 (The eighth Party Central Committee meeting decided to abolish the bureaucratic mechanism of State subsidization); December 1985; May 1986; July 14, 1986 (The Party Central Committee convened a special session - Comrade Le Duan died on July 10, 1986. Comrade Truong Chinh was elected General Secretary); and November 17, 1986.--VNA
