Vietnam business raise competitiveness of domestic products

Ha Noi, Apr. 8 (VNA) -- Customers nationwide have selected products from 422 businesses which they deem to be Viet Nam's highest quality goods, according to a market survey conducted recently by Sai Gon Tiep thi (Sai Gon Maketing) newspaper.

In an effort to turn out high quality products and thus raise their competitiveness, businesses of different economic sectors have focused investment on renewing technology and production management in order to raise product quality, stablise production, ensure resonable product prices, and gain the confidence of customers. They also have paid more attention to improving trade labels on their products.

Vietnamese customers now highly appreciate many Vietnamese-made products such as cement with "Bim Son" and "Ha Tien" trade labels, "Dong Tam" and "Thach Ban" tiles, "Thai Nguyen" steel, "DRC Da Nang" automobile tyres. "Tien Phong" and "Binh Minh" plastic tubes, "Viet-Tiep" locks, PINACO batteries, "Bai Bang" paper, "Biti's" footwear, "Thai Tuan" cloth, "Viet Tien" garments, "Hai Ha" confectionary, "Sai Gon" and "Ha Noi" beer, and Vinamilk dairy products.

A Chau footwear company in Ho Chi Minh City, won the "High quality Vietnamese-made Product" title for the first time in 2000. The company, set up in 1994, this year added USD 1 million to its initial capital of USD 200,000 to raise production capacity to 600,000 pairs of footwear a year. It now has tens of production establishments nationwide which produce and sell quality sport shoes, canvas shoes and other footwear with the "ASIA" label at reasonable prices.

The steel industry has also made considerable progress in raising the competitiveness of its products, said General Director of the Viet Nam Steel Corporation. A series of investment projects have been implemented to change product structure by reducing simple construction steel. The Thai Nguyen Steel and Iron Company has expanded production and invested in a new steel rolling system with a capacity of 300,000 tonnes a year. The Southern Steel Company has also turned out new high-quality products and reduced production costs. Because the total steel production capacity has exceeded domestic demand, steel producers nationwide have strengthened mutual cooperation to stabilize steel prices and become more competitive by raising product and service quality and fighting marketing monopolites.--VNA
