Prime Minister Phan Van Khai on April 2 received Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang, who had expressed his wish to meet with the government leader.

The Most Venerable has been in Hanoi for medical treatment. His health has recovered with the assistance of medical doctors and professors.

Prime Minister Khai said he was delighted to see the Most Venerable's health recovery after the treatment.

He briefed the religious dignitary on the government's policy of religious freedom and the socio-economic achievements made by the people of Vietnam in the on-going national renovation process.

Prime Minister Khai said these achievements were a result of the tireless efforts and close unity of the Party and Vietnamese people, including great contributions made by religious dignitaries, monks, nuns and the religious community nationwide.

Mr Khai also praised the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha for joining hands with people throughout the community in the struggle against foreign invaders for national independence, southern liberation and national reunification.

He said he hoped that, inspired by patriotism and the close ties between Buddhism and the nation, Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang would contribute actively to religious development and national construction.

On his visit, the Most Venerable Thich Huyen Quang paid tribute to the late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum and visited some pagodas and historical sites in Hanoi. (VNA)
