First VN celebrity search firm to spot new faces for movies
Viet Anh, literally translated Vietnamese Image, is helping domestic film producers find young talent for their movies. The firm also specialises in building backdrops and finding sites to shoot on.
Ba Vu runs the company, and has previous experience in the film industry.
"Starting the company was the biggest goal of my life," he says.
He sees himself as a key part in Viet Nam’s cinematic renaissance; "recent Vietnamese films have lured movie-goers back to the cinema, and private film makers and TV stations are making tremendous efforts to produce high quality films.
"I felt it was the right moment to open my company because the local film industry is becoming more professional," Vu says.
He first made a name for himself when he was commissioned to pick Vietnamese actors to star in the Quiet American, the first Hollywood movie to be shot in Viet Nam.
"I gained many valuable lessons and experiences from foreign professionals [involved in the Quiet American]. Now I believe I can run my own firm even though I’m a newcomer," Vu said.
Viet Anh’s first customers include directors Luu Trong Ninh, Ho Quang Minh and Le Hoang (of Bar Girls fame), who have asked Vu to find actors for them for movies to be shot this year.
Ninh says he is after fresh, attractive faces for his latest TV series, Slope of Love, which will be produced by the HCM City Television Film Studios.
"While Ninh just wants amateur actors, Le Hoang prefers them more skilled," Vu says.
"When selecting lead actors, my company considers their suitability for the roles and box-office appeal."
Ninh’s latest movie, Far Away Time, is tipped by Vu to be a block buster, as is Bar Girls II —the original movie has already grossed over US$580,000.
Vu is also eager to hear from any "older and amateurish" individuals yearning to make it onto the big screen; "they can register at our website at vietnam-film.com," he generously offers.
The firm is currently helping organise the Korean movie R Point, which will be filmed in Viet Nam. — VNS
