VN condemns UN blast

HA NOI — Viet Nam has sent its sympathies to the victims of a car bomb which tore through the United Nations’ headquarters in Baghdad on Tuesday.

"We were very shocked at the bomb attack on the UN headquarters in Iraq on August 19, causing huge losses in life and property, and we strongly condemn this violent action," Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman, Le Dung, said on Wednesday.

"We would like to express our deep condolences to the UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, to the victims’ families and especially to the family of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the newly-appointed UN special representative to Iraq.

"Once again, we express our support for the role of the UN in its efforts to stabilise the Iraqi situation and re-build the country," Le Dung said.

On the same day Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nguyen Dy Nien, sent Annan a message of condolence over the deaths of de Mello and other UN staff. — VNS
