Catholics in Bui Chu diocese live the gospel amidst the nation

Nam Dinh, Sept. 20 (VNA) - The Bui Chu diocese, on Monday, held a seminar on "the Catholics in Bui Chu diocese live the gospel amidst the nation, contributing to social security maintenance, and building a life of peace and happiness," in Quan Phuong Church in Hai Hau district, Nam Dinh province.

Representatives of the Government Committee for Religious Affairs, leaders of the Party Committees, People's Councils, and People's Committees of Nam Dinh province and Hai Hau district, priests, nuns and representatives of the Catholics attended the event.

Catholicism was first evangelized into Viet Nam, especially in Bui Chu, 470 years ago. Bui Chu diocese covers six of Nam Dinh province's nine districts. It consists of 129 parishes, 400 churches, and 378,000 Catholic people.

The Catholics in Bui Chu diocese have up held the spirit of solidarity, living the gospel amidst the nation, good religious practises and patriotism. They have actively participated in patriotic emulation movements, and activities to fight social evils and maintain social security.

The seminar discussed the role of parish and vicars in social security maintenance. The participants heard reports on charitable activities to contribute to social security, assistance to the poor, developing crafts and uniting for peace and development. They also discussed issues on employment for Catholics, and assistance to the poor and handicapped children. The Thanh An-Bui Chu orphanage has so far cared and given job training to 175 orphans, the seminar reported.
