DCM Minh Joins Families with Children from VN to Celebrate Vietnamese New Year
Deputy Chief of Mission Nguyen Tien Minh, Cultural Attache Nguyen The Cuong and Third Secretary Nguyen Sy Tue joined Families with Children from Vietnam living in Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland in a celebration ceremony for Tet - Vietnamese Lunar New Year in Arlington Virginia on February 2.
In observing a Vietnamese tradition, Minh presented the children with "mung tuoi" - well wisher coins, symbolically blessing the children a new year of age of good health and more success at school. Minh noted with appreciation efforts by the families to maintain the Vietnamese cultural identity for the children and encouraged them to continue to play their role as a friendship bridge between Vietnam and the US.
The event featuring Vietnamese dragon dance, lantern procession, Ao Dai traditional dress show by Virginia's George Mason University students, American singing and dancing is an opportunity to help the children to learn and adapt new life and culture in the US while maitaining their roots, said Kathleen Brown, the group coordinator and the celebration organizer. This is a way to promote the understanding and consolidate friendship between Vietnamese and American people.
Later in the days, the families and children attended a reception hosted by Ambassador and Mrs. Le Cong Phung to welcome the New Year at the Embassy of Vietnam.
