Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attends Nuclear Security Summit
VGP - PM Nguyen Tan Dung left Ha Noi on March 26 to attend the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul and pay an official visit to the Republic of Korea at the invitation of President Lee Myung-bak.
The two-day summit takes place at a time when there is growing concern about nuclear safety and security after the Fukushima nuclear crisis in Japan.
Joint by leaders from more than 50 countries, the event offers a chance to examine the implementation of commitments made at the first summit in the US in 2010 and to discuss measures to promote nuclear safety and security in the new context.
It creates a forum for them to reconfirm political commitments to ensuring nuclear safety and security, foster the use of nuclear power for peaceful purposes, and discuss the operational mechanism of the Nuclear Security Summit.
It also provides a chance for developing countries to strengthen international cooperation and apply advanced technology to the peaceful use of nuclear power.
The summit is expected to adopt a statement showing the participating countries’ high resolve to face nuclear terrorist threats, reconfirm the IAEA’s role, heighten the need for international cooperation and assistance, and promote the countries’ right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
PM Dung is scheduled to deliver a speech at the plenary session and meet with Government and State leaders of the participating countries to exchange views on the peaceful use of nuclear power.
After the summit, PM Nguyen Tan Dung will make an official visit to the RoK from March 27-29.
The two sides will organize the Viet Nam-RoK Friendship Year 2012 to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties.
Currently, the RoK has become one of the largest investors in Viet Nam with the total registered capital of more than US $23 billion.
The RoK is one of Viet Nam’s largest trade partners, with two-way trade turnover reaching nearly US $17.9 billion in 2011, an increase of 39% against 2010. Both countries are striving to raise bilateral trade to US $20 billion by 2015.
The RoK is also Viet Nam’s second biggest Official Development Assistance (ODA) providers after Japan.
The Vietnamese PM’s visit to the RoK is expected to strengthen knowledge and belief between the two countries’ leaders as well as confirmed Viet Nam’s consistent policies in promoting the strategic cooperative partnership relations.
