Viet Nam supports UN's assistance to Iraq

Ha Noi, May 27 (VNA) - Viet Nam supports the United Nations and the international community's efforts in helping the Iraqi people stabilise and rebuild their country on the basis of respecting their independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and self-determination.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Ms Phan Thuy Thanh, said this in Ha Noi on Tuesday, in response to several correspondents' queries about Viet Nam's reaction to the UN Security Council's lifting sanctions against Iraq.

Vietnam joins negotiation on WTO accession

World Trade Organisation (WTO) members havespoken highly of Vietnam's positive changes in building and reforming economic policies at the sixth round of talks on the country's WTO accession.

The negotiation took place in Geneva from May 12-22 with the participation of the United States, the European Union, China, Japan, India, Australia, Switzerland, Malaysia, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Uruguay and others, according to the Ministry of Trade.

Vietnam free of cholera: OIE

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has recognised that Vietnam is safe from bovine cholera, according to the Veterinary Department.

This was recognised in the Resolution 18 adopted during the 71st annual session of the OIE from May 18-23.

Before 1978, the infectious disease had struck cattle in Vietnam but there has been no more case since that year.

The OIE says that a country is recognised as being free from the disease if no cases are found within 10 years.

Investor confidence healthy despite SARS

THE SARS-related slump is only temporary, business leaders say, as investors are showing no intention of abandoning Vietnam for greener pastures.

The World Health Organisation declared Vietnam SARS-free on April 28, but not before the disease killed five medical workers at the Hanoi French Hospital and infected 63 others.

More than 600 people have died from the disease worldwide.

New laws will define power of local councils

The draft amendments ignited two days of heated debate during last week’s third congress of the National Assembly’s 11th legislature.

Website answers corporate queries

HCM CITY (May 22, 2003) — The municipal government on Tuesday launched a website to help answer questions from businesses and resolve difficulties facing those businesses.

The deputy chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) in HCM City, Sesto E. Vecchi, posted the first question on the website to municipal authorities, marking the launch of the website.

Viet Nam asserts right to sovereignty over islands



HA NOI — Viet Nam has unquestionable sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Phan Thuy Thanh.

She was commenting on China’s imposition of a ban on fishing in the East Sea area from June 1 to August 1.
