Another oil field discovered offshore Vietnam

Ha Noi, Oct. 23 (VNA) -- A new oil field has been discovered on Viet Nam's southeastern continental shelf by the Cuu Long Joint Operation Company (JOC).

The oil field, called Golden Lion, is located at lot 15-1 of Cuu Long low sea-bed area offshore Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in southern Viet Nam.

A PetroVietnam (Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation) official had disclosed that oil was discovered at a sloping depth of 3,700m.

The U.S Govt pledged 10 million USD for HIV/AIDS prevention


Ha Noi, Oct. 23 (VNA) -- The U.S. has pledged USD 10 million to the second phase of a project on HIV/AIDS prevention and care in Viet Nam.

A document to this effect was signed in Ha Noi on Oct. 23 by President of the National AIDS Committee and Deputy Minister of Health Tran Chi Liem, and Deputy Chief of the U.S. million in Viet Nam Robert Poter.

The second phase of the project will be implemented over the next five years and will focus on promoting preventive measures and providing better care to those who have already contracted HIV/AIDS.

FM Nguyen Dy Nien meets Russian, U.S, Chilean, Peru FMs


Ha Noi, Oct. 22 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has met on separate occasions with Russian FM Igor Ivanov, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Chilian FM Maria Valenzuela, and Peruvian FM Diego Garcia Sayan in Shanghai on the sidelines of the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Ministerial Meeting and the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting.

Vietnam, China to enhance comprehensive ties


Vietnam and China will strengthen comprehensive bilateral co-operation, affirmed Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and Chinese President Jiang Zemin during their meeting in Shanghai on October 19.

Mr Khai arrived in Shanghai the same day to attend the ninth APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation) Economic Leaders Meeting on October 20 and 21.

Russia to boost co-operation with Vietnam:


Russia will continue to develop its comprehensive co-operation with Vietnam though it will withdraw from Vietnam's Cam Ranh sea port in January of 2002.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said this to Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai in Shanghai, China, on October 19.

The two leaders are in China to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting from October 20-21.

<B>NA Committee prepares for ratification of Vietnam -US BTA </B>

The External Relations Committee of the National Assembly has proposed that the National Assembly Standing Committee submit the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) to the National Assembly for ratification at the 10th session scheduled to be held between November and December of this year.

The committee met in a plenary session in Hanoi on October 19, under the chairmanship of its Chairman Do Van Tai, who is also a member of the NA Standing Committee, to supervise preparations for the National Assembly to ratify the BTA.

Post and Health services join in battle against anthrax

Ha Noi, Oct. 22 (VNA) -- Both post and health officials have announced strong measures against any possible transmission of anthrax bacteria through the mails and strict quarantine measures at border gates.

As a result, no exposure case has been reported so far and the danger of the disease contamination is extremely small, the officials said in an interview with Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper on the Oct. 22 issue.

FM Spokeswoman on Russia's withdrawal from Cam Ranh


Ha Noi, Oct. 18 (VNA) -- Russia's decision to begin withdrawing from Cam Ranh port in January 2002 is in keeping with the agreement reached between the two countries, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Phan Thuy Thanh, said in Ha Noi on Oct. 18.

Answering foreign correspondents' questions regarding Viet Nam's reaction to Russia's withdrawal, the spokesperson said: "We are confident that the traditional relations and multi-form cooperation between Viet Nam and the Russian Federation as two strategic partners will be further boosted".

Customs procedures streamlined at Sai Gon & Hai Phong ports


Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- Exports and importers are breathing a sigh of relief as officials start to streamline a host of cumbersome administrative requirements for customs.

Some 17 steps in the customs process will be cut to just five under the new rules.

All export goods will be checked at the border gate, not on commercial premises - in a bid to eradicate the potential for bribes.
