Foreign Ministry Spokesperson on U.S. catfish decision

Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- An unfair decision issued by the U.S. Commerce Department on the "tra" and "basa" catfish law-suit will undermine the trust of Vietnamese and other foreign businesses in the U.S. trade liberalisation policy, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

Phan Thuy Thanh was answering an AFP's question on whether Viet Nam is optimistic about the U.S. Commerce Department's decision on the "tra" and "basa" catfish dispute to be announced on Jan. 24 and how the decision will affect the Viet Nam-U.S. bilateral economic and trade relations.

The spokeswoman stressed: "We request that the U.S. Commerce Department adopts a considerate, fair and right approach in harmony with the objective reality and the principle equal competition in international trade as well as in light of the spirit of the Viet Nam-U.S. bilateral trade agreement, thus causing no harm to the interests of both countries and the interests of enterprises and consumers in the U.S."

"An unfair decision on this dispute will severely undermine the trust of Vietnamese and other foreign businesses in the trade liberalisation policy that the U.S. has regularly mentioned. It will also bring no benefits to the promotion of Viet Nam-U.S. economic and trade relations," the spokesperson concluded.
