Rumor about "ROVR-2"

Feb. 21 (VNA) -- There is no information yet from the U.S about permitting Vietnamese returnees who have served less than three years at re-education camps to resettle in the U.S. under the Humanitarian Order (HO) programme, says a senior official.

"Up to Feb. 20, 2001, Ho Chi Minh City's External Affairs Department has not yet received any information from the U.S. about permitting Vietnamese returnees who have served less than three years at re-education camps to resettle in the U.S under the H.O programme", confirms Le Kim Lam, Deputy Director of the Department's Consular Section.

"The Department has not been provided with any information about the implementation of the Resettlement of Vietnamese Returnees Programme-2 (ROVR-2) that allows all returnees to resettle in other countries", Lam says.

"The Department has been implementing the ROVR that allows only those Vietnamese returnees who are listed for resettlement in the U.S.", he emphasizes.

It is reported that a lot of people have recently come to the Immigration Office of Ho Chi Minh City's Police Department applying for the granting of passports.

These people have been lured by rumours that the Governments of Viet Nam and the U.S. have agreed to continue implementing the above-mentioned programme known as ROVR-2, which means all returnees would be granted entry to the U.S. without vouching from their relatives, Police Lt. Colonel Nguyen Manh Tuong says.--VNA
