Vietnam keen to develop long-term relations with the US
Radio Voice of Vietnam - February 1, 2005
Vietnam attaches importance to building long-term and stable relations with the US on the basis of mutual respect for national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, and the equality and interests of each nation.
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dzung made the statement while receiving the new US Ambassador to Vietnam, Michael W.Marine, in Hanoi on Monday.
Mr Dzung said in recent years, Vietnam-US relations have constantly developed in economics, politics, health care, science and technology, education, and security and military affairs, despite some outstanding issues. He said that Vietnam wishes to further boost the two countries' bilateral co-operation, including co-operation on the soldiers missing in action (MIA) issue, and in HIV/AIDS and drug prevention activities.
Ambassador Marine said he will try his best to promote bilateral co-operation, particularly on issues of mutual concern, such as Vietnam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and specific economic development projects, as well as contribute to the development of bilateral ties in the interests of the two people and for peace, stability and development.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien sent a message of congratulations to Condoleezza Rice on her appointment as Secretary of State of the United States.
