VN, US discuss how to resolve differences



HA NOI — Viet Nam and the US should strive for greater bilateral co-operation, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Khoan told James Kelly, the US assistant secretary of state for East Asia and Pacific affairs at a meeting in Ha Noi yesterday.

Kelly is visiting Viet Nam for the fourth political dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries.

At a meeting yesterday between a Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Foreign Minister Le Van Bang and the US delegation, the two sides agreed to make greater efforts to create a favourable political atmosphere between the two countries.

They exchanged opinions frankly and discussed ways to resolve differences over some issues such as human rights, religion, ethnicity and trade disputes, and said they were pleased with developments in politics, science, technology, education and humanitarian activities.

They agreed to resolve disagreements through negotiation, discussed ways to further promote bilateral relations, and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

Kelly yesterday also met Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien and visited the Institute of International Relations. — VNS
