"Lac Hong Ambassadors" honored
The Vietnam Glory award ceremony was held at Hanoi’s Temple of Literature on February 5, attended by members of the National Assembly, Vietnam Fatherland Front, Hanoi People’s Committee, the US and Russian Embassies and ten of the 15 selected overseas Vietnamese for this title in 2005.
With the theme “Lac Hong Ambassadors”, the second Vietnam Glory award ceremony on the evening of February 5 was broadcast live on VTV1 and on the Internet by VietNamNet to serve audiences at home and abroad.
Le Truyen, Deputy Chairman of Central Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee presented the awards to the first outstanding overseas Vietnamese in the field of arts, including composer Nguyen Lan Tuat. Before the award ceremony, Lan Tuat expressed his wish to talk about Vietnamese-Russian friendship, saying, “In the remaining years of my life, I will positively contribute to developing and strengthening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Russia.”
Though they did not directly receive their awards at the Temple of Literature, artist Le Ba Dang and composer Nguyen Thien Dao showed their feelings through short clips from Paris. Dang bared his heart saying he “always thinks of the homeland”, while the deep sentiment of Dao, named in the book Le Petit Larousse (Who is Who), came through in his statement, “The composer must sponge on the homeland, his soul and heart must be inside the heart of the nation”.
“Vietnam Glory is a practical activity concreting Resolution 36,” said Le Truyen, Deputy Chairman of Central Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee.
Apart from three overseas Vietnamese operating in the fields of art and culture, six others working in the areas of health, education and six in science and technology were also honoured.
“I could forget the houses where my parents were born and I could forget more or less the Vietnamese language but I will never forget the love with Vietnam,” said Dr. Le Phuoc Hung in his poor Vietnamese. Dr. Hung lived only his first ten years in Vietnam and 26 years after that in the US. Dr. Hung said that in the future he would bring Vietnamese students to universities in New York and other US states for study and research.
Businessman Phan Thanh from Canada, chairman of the Association of Overseas Vietnamese Entrepreneurs in HCM City, thanked VietNamNet for organizing the programme.
“The Vietnam Glory programme is an indirect encouragement to overseas Vietnamese. It is more important than policy and appeals. I hope there will be many programmes like this for overseas Vietnamese in the coming time,” he said. “I’m moved because the homeland appreciates scientists at home and abroad with the generous heart of a virtuous mother,” said Vietnamese French Dr. Nguyen Quy Dao.
“30 years ago I returned to Vietnam and saw a lot of difficulties but I’m still determined to return home because of pride of our heroic tradition of fighting aggressors. Today, after 30 years, thanks to more open policies, the country’s face has changed completely,” said Vietnamese-Japanese Dr. Nguyen Tri Dung, Director of NICD Company – Minh Tran. “I think that the contribution of overseas Vietnamese scientists will create Vietnam’s dream. We have the right to dream of a solid future that will come to our country,” he added.
