Vietnam and US Hold 12th Human Rights Dialogue

Vietnam and the US had a frank discussion on democracy and human rights at the 12th round of their human right dialogues.

Present at the dialogue in Washington D.C on April 24 were Pham Binh Minh, Assistant to the Vietnamese Foreign Minister, and B. F. Lowenkron, US Assistant Secretary of State.

Reviewing the positive development steps of the two countries’ relations, Minh stressed the need to further develop the bilateral relationship, including the discussion on human rights, towards constructive partnership, friendship and multi-faceted co-operation on the basis of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefits.

The Vietnamese representative briefed the US side on Vietnam’s achievements in all fields, particularly social-economic-cultural fields, including the protection and execution of basic rights and freedom of people.

He stressed that although the two countries have differences of opinion at times they share a great interest in reinforcing their bilateral relationship, ensuring the security, stability and prosperity for the sake of their own people.

He also raised his concerns regarding the US’s protection and promotion of rights and freedom, especially the torture and maltreatment of prisoners, and the racial discrimination and discrimination of minority groups and immigrants.
