Viet Nam maintains high economic growth in January

Ha Noi, Jan. 28 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's socio-economic development in January is on the right track as it was in the last months of 2002, said Planning and Investment Minister Vo Hong Phuc at a monthly cabinet meeting in Ha Noi on Tuesday.

"In January, industrial production grew 14.9 percent year-on-year, of which the state-owned sector recorded an increase of 9.7 percent; the non-state sector, 21.5 percent and the foreign-invested sector, 16.3 percent," the minister told the cabinet.

Viet Nam slams US decision on Vietnamese catfish exports

Ha Noi, Jan. 28 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's foreign ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh on Tuesday lashed out at the Jan. 27 decision of the US Department of Commerce (DOC) pertaining to the petition filed by the Catfish Farmers of America (CFA) against Viet Nam's frozen "Tra" and "Basa" fish fillets exported to the US market.

"Viet Nam deeply regrets this decision and cannot accept it," Thanh said, while responding to reporters' queries about Viet Nam's reaction to the DOC's decision.

VASEP rejects US preliminary decision on Viet Nam's tra and basa

Ho Chi Minh City, Jan. 28 (VNA) -- The Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) on Tuesday strongly rejected the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC)'s preliminary decision on the anti-dumping duty investigation of certain frozen "basa" and "tra" fish fillets from Viet Nam.

U.S. helps Viet Nam prevent HIV/AIDS in workplaces


Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- The U.S. will provide 600,000 USD for a programme on prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

The aid was announced at a ceremony held in Ha Noi on Thursday to launch the SMART Work Programme (Strategically Managing AIDS Responses Together) to combat AIDS in Viet Nam.

The aid will be provided by the U.S. Depatment of Labour within a cooperation programme with Viet Nam's Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs (MOLISA).

Viet Nam slams Human Rights Watch's report


Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has again lashed out at the Human Rights Watch (HRW)'s January 21 allegations, which said "Viet Nam has continued its crackdown on ethnic minority people in the Central Highlands".

"There is no truth in these allegations," foreign ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh stated on Thursday, while responding to queries from correspondents, who asked about Viet Nam's reaction to the HRW's accusations.

Ha Noi, Jan. 23 (VNA) -- An unfair decision issued by the U.S. Commerce Department on the "tra" and "basa" catfish law-suit will undermine the trust of Vietnamese and other foreign businesses in the U.S. trade liberalisation policy, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

HA NOI — As American leaders threaten to go to war against Iraq, members of the country’s younger generation came to Viet Nam with a clear message for world leaders: that war can be avoided through friendship and communication.

Ten undergraduates from St. John’s University in Jamaica Plains, New York met with their Vietnamese counterparts from the Institute for International Relations at an unprecedented five-day conference that ended last Friday.

Vietnamese goods present in 200 foreign markets

Ha Noi, Jan. 14 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has so far exported goods to more than 200 foreign markets.

The five leading staples - cruide oil, garments and textiles, aquatic products, footwear and rice - have contributed around 60 percent of the country's export value. Garments and textiles, aquatic products, and footwear annually fetch more than 1.5 billion USD each.

Viet Nam on the way to lower import taxes

Ha Noi, Jan. 13 (VNA) -- As the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) agreement nears, Viet Nam agreed to lower import taxes to beneath 5 percent on 97 percent of goods by 2005.

This means by 2005, Viet Nam will be using a system of tax rates for 10,800 commodities, whereas now there are 6,500 different tax rates in use.

And the Government will wait until July to implement the widespread tax cut on ASEAN imports.
