US Government permits 3 Airlines to provide service to Vietnam


Ha Noi, Aug. 24 (VNA) -- The U.S. Government on Aug. 23 allowed three U.S. airlines, Delta Airlines Inc., Northwest Airlines Corp. and United Airlines, to provide service to Viet Nam through code-sharing arrangements.

Under code-sharing principle, an airline sells tickets under its own name, but another carrier provides some or all of the service.

Delta Airlines will code-share with Air France for service to Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi.

Vietnam and Indonesia assure of further cooperation


Ha Noi, Aug. 22 (VNA) -- Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong and Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri have expressed their determination to continue promoting bilateral cooperative relations between the two countries by boosting cooperation in commerce, investment, tourism, and culture. They also agreed to step up efforts for a resolution of the continental shelf issue between two nations.

The two Presidents began their talks in Ha Noi on the morning of Aug. 22.

Vietnam and Indonesia sign rice supply agreement


Ha Noi, Aug. 22 (VNA) -- An agreement on rice supply between Viet Nam and Indonesia was signed in Ha Noi during the one-day visit by Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri today, Aug. 22.

Signatories to the accord were General Director of the Southern Food Corporation Duong Thi Ngoc Trieu of Viet Nam and Director of the Indonesia National Reserve Department Widjanarko Puspoyo.

President Tran Duc Luong and his Indonesian counterpart witnessed the signing ceremony.

ROK roll out red carpet to welcome Vietnamese President


Ha Noi, Aug. 23 (VNA) -- A State welcome ceremony for Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong was held in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, today, Aug. 23.

The Vietnamese leader began his four-day official visit to the RoK from Aug. 22 as guest of President Kim Dea-jung. The visit, the first ever by a Vietnamese State leader since the two countries established diplomatic ties in December 1992, aims at taking bilateral ties and cooperation to a higher level of "comprehensive partnership".

Vietnam signs international coffee agreement


Ha Noi, Aug. 23 (VNA) -- Viet Nam signed the 2001 International Coffee Agreement at the UN headquarters in New York on Aug. 22.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Nguyen Thanh Chau was the signatory.

Countries that have signed the agreement include Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Japan, Uganda, Tanzania, and Viet Nam.

Newspaper welcomes Indonesian President's visit to Vietnam

The U.S postal service should comply with int'l law


Ha Noi, Aug. 21 (VNA) -- A group of Vietnamese exiles in the U.S. are not in a position to object to the printing of Viet Nam's national flag on the cover of a pamphlet published by the U.S. Postal Service, the national daily Nhan Dan (People) says in a commentary today, Aug. 21.

The paper points out that those people who have rejected the flag have counted themselves out of the Vietnamese community, because to the Vietnamese people, the Red and Golden Star Flag is a most sacred symbol.

Overseas Vietnamese entile to the same air fares


Ha Noi, Aug. 16 (VNA) -- All overseas Vietnamese holding either foreign or Vietnamese passports and their relatives will be entitled to the same air fares as Vietnamese citizens in the country as of August 16, 2001.

This was announced in official dispatch No. 138/CHK-KT-KV issued on August 15 by the Civil Aviation Administration of Viet Nam (CAAV) guiding the sale of air tickets to overseas Vietnamese on their home-coming visits.--VNA
