ASEM Eco. meeting gives priority to simplification of cusstoms



Ha Noi, Sept. 11 (VNA) -- The third ASEM Economic Ministers' Meeting (EMM-3), gave first priority to the simplification of customs procedures in a move to remove trade barriers and increase trade between member countries, according to Trade Minister Vu Khoan of Viet Nam.

Khoan was speaking at a press briefing on the outcome of the EMM-3 in Ha Noi on Sept. 11. He said that the ministers focused their discussion on how to apply 'paperless' customs procedures among member countries.

Vietnamese newspapers condemn so called "Vietnam human right act"


Ha Noi, Sept. 8 (VNA) -- All Viet Nam's major dailies today, Sept.8, came out strongly against the U.S. House of Representatives' recent endorsement of the so-called "Viet Nam Human Rights Act," considering it a rude intervention into Viet Nam's internal affairs.

The leading newspaper Nhan Dan (People) says in a commentary that the recent move of the U.S. House has, for the most part, resulted from the short-sightedness of some people and circles in the United States as well as pressure by a handful of people with hatred for their past defeat.

Four Vietnamese export priorities to U.S. market


Ha Noi, Sept. 9 (VNA) -- The Government will give priority to four items exported to the United States, namely textiles-garment and leather-footwear, handicrafts and fine arts articles, processed food, and software products, according to the Foreign Trade Development Centre (FTDC).

Viet Nam earned USD 821 million from exports of food, live animals, lubricants and raw materials to the U.S. in 2000, up 35 percent over the previous year. The country expects to increase this year's turnover by 30 percent over last year.

Gov't plans to attract USD 12 billion foreign investment

Ha Noi, Sept. 4 (VNA) -- The Government has unveiled its ambitious plan to solicit USD 12 billion in foreign investment between now and 2005, considering this part of its effort to bolster the national economic development in the years to come.

In a recent regulation coded 09/NQ-CP, the Government said: "Foreign investment must be promoted to attract USD 12 billion of registered capital, with USD 11 billion to be disbursed, in the 2001-2005 period."

Hanoi plans to develop IT center


Ha Noi, Sept. 4 (VNA) -- Ha Noi plans to spend VND 400 billion (USD 26.6 million) on developing information technology, making this a key industry in the first decade of the new century.

The city's first step is to built an IT service centre and put it into use by the end of this year. The next step aims to build an IT development centre and the Nam Thang Long IT industrial zone in 2002.

U.S helps train Vietnamese officers in munitions disposal


Ha Noi, Sept. 5 (VNA) -- Fourteen Vietnamese technicians are following a month-long training course of using DSS, a system supporting dynamite disposal transferred by the United States Government to Viet Nam.

The system includes office information equipment in support of clearing bombs and mines.

Software companies enjoy free corporate tax for 4 years


Vietnamese and foreign software businesses that are operating in Vietnam and do not fall under the adjusted objects of the Law on Foreign Investment in Vietnam will enjoy exemption from the corporate tax for four years when they have taxable income.

This was announced in a circular issued on May 21, by the Ministry of Finance, on guiding the implementation of tax preference which is stipulated in a decision by the Prime Minister on some policies and measures to boost investment and development of the software industry.

Seminar introduces e-commerce network between Vietnam and US


Ha Noi, August 28 (VNA) -- Information technology agencies of Viet Nam and the United States have introduced a new IT network, which they described as an "E-commerce bridge" between the two countries.

The Business Vietnamopenmarket-BVOM- is currently being tested in Viet Nam to see whether it will help Vietnamese businesses to better promote their products and services among international clients, said resident representative of the American Technology Inc.(ATI) Dr. Le Ngoc Sau.
