US aid package to flood victims in Mekong delta

Oct. 18 (VNA)-- A flight of the Air Force of the US Secretary of Defense arrived in Ho Chi Minh City today, Oct. 18, transporting 5.4 tonnes of emergency aid from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to help flood victims in Mekong delta provinces.

The USD 200,000 aid package, including plastic cloth to make shelters for about 4,000 people, was transferred immediately to the flooded areas.

Another two flights carrying aid from USAID are expected to land in Viet Nam on Oct. 20, bringing 13 jet boats and two water filters.

Joint Vietnam - Algeria communique




Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika paid an official visit to Viet Nam from Oct. 15-18 at the invitation of President Tran Duc Luong.

International fair to open in Hanoi on Oct. 19



An international industrial trade fair will be opened on October 19.

The fair attracts 300 businesses of 12 ministries and branches and 30 provinces together with nearly 100 companies from 14 countries and territories in the region including the Czech Republic, China, Taiwan, India, Japan, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Italy, Russia and Ukraine.

Vietnam and Algerian Presidents discuss ways to boost relations




Ha Noi, Oct. 15 (VNA) -- President Tran Duc Luong and visiting Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika discussed measures to bring the traditional friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between the two countries to a new plane of development.

Cooperation with world community for child care and protection


Oct. 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam gives high priority to child care and protection, affirmed a Vietnamese representative to the United Nations at the UN's Third Committee discussion on promoting and protecting the rights of children in New York.

The Vietnamese representative spoke of the Vietnamese Government's efforts to implement a policy for socio-economic development and political stability, which gives high priority to child care and protection.

MFA Spokesperson on Middle East violence


Ha Noi, Oct. 13 (VNA) -- The spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Viet Nam's support for the Palestinian people's just struggle for an independent State of Palestine and a peaceful solution to the Palestine question.

In response to a question raised by an AFP correspondent about the increasing violence in the Middle East, the spokesperson said:

Vietnam hosts ASEAN Senior Official Meeting


Ha Noi, Oct. 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam hosted the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (ASEAN-SOM) at deputy-ministerial level in Ha Noi on Oct. 12 and 13, the first meeting in its capacity as President of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Standing Committee. The meeting was chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Tam Chien.

The meeting discussed measures to implement agreements reached at the 33rd Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Bangkok in July 2000 and the annual meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in New York in September this year.

Trans-Asia Railway will run through Vietnam



Ha Noi, Oct. 14 (VNA) -- ASEAN transport ministers have given the green light to a USD 2.5 billion rail link running through Viet Nam and Cambodia. The rail link, the Trans-Asia Railway Project, will link seven ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries with China.
